| During the third century in Rome Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men who were to be potential soldiers. He thought romance made them weak.
It probably did, but in any case St. Valentine, a priest, performed marriages for young lovers in secret. Around 496 AD Pope Gelasius honored him with Valentine’s Day as a Christian holiday in which couples exchanged gifts.
Centuries later we still exchange gifts, and at Marnee’s Cookies we believe cookies are the new candy!
